Reminders and Tips from the Maryland Department of Agriculture

Registered Employees: All technicians within your company should be a Registered Employee with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA). Click here to read about Pesticide Applicator Certification and Business Licensing Requirements. See page 6 for specific information about the training requirements for Registered Employees.  If you have a new employee(s) needing to become a Registered Employee with your company, please use this form to request an ID.

Registered Employees should be renewed annually by submitting the Registered Employee Renewal form and submitting the $30 annual registration fee for each employee. An employee’s registration is valid from July 1 through June 30. The ID card itself will not be reissued each year. If a replacement card is needed for a current Registered Employee, please request a replacement card by emailing pest.reg@maryland.gov.

Continuing Education Credits: It is good practice to keep proof of attendance for any recertification courses you attend. MSPCA always provides a certificate to each attendee after our recertification events. We suggest you scan them and keep them in a recertification file for yourself and/or your employees. They will come in handy during the renewal process.

Certification Exams:  If you, or an employee, are seeking initial certification, please click here for an application and to read about important information. Once an application has been approved, you will receive information about testing. Online testing is available through Everblue and in-person testing is also available. For questions about taking an exam online, please email Alexander.Lehmann1@maryland.gov

Regulation Changes for Restricted Use Pesticides (RUPs):  Changes in the regulations/statutes are coming pertaining to the use of RUPs. The main change will be that Registered Employees will no longer be able to work under the supervision of a Certified Applicator when applying RUPs. It is a good idea for companies that use RUPs to get their technicians certified as Commercial Applicators, sooner rather than later.

MDA Reminders:

  • Always read the labels before applying any pesticides. You may have read the label of a pesticide previously, but labels change. It is good practice to read, or re-read the label before applying any pesticide.
  • The pesticide use survey for 2024 will be sent out in January. Please complete and return the survey promptly.
